LS: Alkaline Foods for Acid Reflux

And don’t forget Evamor Alkaline Artesian Water …

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid moves backwards up the esophagus causing burning, because the lining of the esophagus is not meant to be exposed to digestive juices. During the later portion of the digestive process, bicarbonate is released from the pancreas, changing the pH and neutralizing stomach acids. Eating certain foods may mimic the action of the pancreas, creating an alkaline environment and neutralizing acidity.

High-Potassium Foods
Foods high in potassium neutralize the acidity in the stomach, helping to create an alkaline environment, according to Dr. Theodore Baroody in “Alkalize or Die.” In particular, apple cider vinegar, raw, organic honey, fresh lemon juice and very ripe bananas may provide pain relief for acid reflux sufferers.

One tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice should be mixed with 6 to 8 oz. of water and consumed all at one time. Although lemon juice is acidic in nature, it creates a paradoxical reaction in the stomach, stimulating the release of bicarbonate in the pancreas and neutralizing acids, reports If the lemon water is too tart, honey can be added to sweeten. In addition, honey can be eaten straight from a spoon or mixed in herbal tea to help relive symptoms.

Apple cider vinegar is similar to lemon juice in action. It too is a mild acid and high in potassium, which stimulates the release of digestive juices, including bicarbonate from the pancreas. In doing so, stomach acids are neutralized and alkalinity is established.

When eating bananas, they should be ripe, says Baroody, with brown spots on the skin. The riper the fruit, the sweeter and the more alkaline-forming it is.

Ancient and Sprouted Grains
The ancient grains, amaranth, millet and quinoa are often referred to as “tiny grains” and are consider alkaline-forming on the system, according to Baroody. All three of these grains are recommended as replacements for processed, genetically modified wheat, which create acidosis throughout the body, according to “The pH Miracle.”

In addition to ancient grains, sprouted grains are also considered more healthful, according to Baroody, and able to alkalize the stomach preventing acid reflux. The tiny grains and sprouted grains are available in their natural form and in prepared products at health food stores.

Baking Soda
Baking soda may be highly beneficial to those with acid reflux and can almost instantly neutralize stomach acids, reports the website, and create an alkaline state. Mixing 1/2 tsp. baking soda in an 8 oz. glass of water and drinking it all at one time may relieve burning pain and acid reflux symptoms for some people. Baking soda can raise the blood pressure, so a health practitioner should be consulted by anyone taking medicines for hypertension.
