Alkaline Whole Foods
Every cell of the body functions optimally within a certain pH range–pH is a measure of acidity and alkalinity. Christine Marquette, RD, LD, and ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist in Austin, Texas, says that the goal of our body is to be in a neutral state; neither too alkaline or too acidic. Ideal pH balance is about 7.4. Many processed foods, sweets and saturated fats have high levels of acid, which throws the body off balance and into acidosis. After digestion, the body seeks out the best possible sources of alkaline to counteract the excess acid in the blood. To do this, says Marquette, “The body breaks down bone to release calcium, phosphates, and basic alkaline salts into the blood.” When this happens, many physical ailments can occur including stress fractures and eventual osteoporosis.
