Alkaline Foods Vs. Acidic

When you hear the term “acidic foods,” you might think of citrus fruits or spicy dishes that cause heartburn or acid reflux. In nutrition circles, however, the terms “acidic” and “alkaline” refer to how the metabolism of foods affects the pH balance of the blood, urine and other bodily fluids. The acid-alkaline theory of nutrition holds that many diseases and conditions, such as arthritis and osteoporosis, stem from an accumulation of too much acid in the body. Although no scientific studies have so far upheld this theory, a diet that emphasizes the consumption of fruits and vegetables, which are mostly alkaline, does appear to support overall health.
